Courses 2027
Learn by doing at De Wiersse: pruning, fruit and flower meadows
De Wiersse is the perfect place to learn gardening. The garden is home to hundreds of plant species, from climbing roses dating back to 1913 to rare hydrangeas and an exceptional fruit collection. Knowledge of garden maintenance has been passed down here for generations.
In 2027 several courses will be available. In February a practical three-day pruning course: pruning for flowers in your garden. In early March there is a day of fruit pruning: apples and pears. Take both and you will receive a €50 discount. In summer there is a one-day course on flower meadows and hay meadows. With a leading approach to converting lawn into hay meadow, and more than 20 hectares of examples at every stage, De Wiersse is the ideal place to learn this.

Pruning for flowers in your garden: learn to look, learn to prune
24 to 26 February 2027
You do not need to know plant names in order to prune well. You need to learn to look. In this three-day course you learn to recognise growth patterns: how a plant branches, where it flowers, what is old wood and what is new. Once you see that, you can prune any plant.
This is a practical course: we spend about 80 percent of the time outdoors, secateurs in hand, in a garden where everything grows: ramblers and climbing roses from 1913 alongside modern shrub roses, six kinds of hydrangea, a pergola full of clematis and wisteria, yew and beech hedges, philadelphus and buddleia. You learn when and how to prune: reading the wood, shaping the plant and seeing where the energy is.
Day 1: Blossom on old wood
Plants that form their buds the year before. Prune at the wrong moment and you prune away the flowering. We work with hydrangeas (macrophylla, serrata, quercifolia and aspera), philadelphus, elder, lilac, ramblers on the pergola and roses in the wild garden. You learn to read the plant itself to see where the buds sit and how to prune for both flowering and good shape.
Day 2: Blooming on new wood
Today, the plants that flower each year on this season’s wood. Prune them back at the right time in spring, and they return with more blooms. We work with Hydrangea paniculata and arborescens, buddleia, shrub roses and tea roses. With every plant the same question: how does it grow, and what does that mean for your secateurs?
Day 3: Climbing plants, pollarding and trees
’s Mornings the climbers: climbing roses such as ‘Madame Grégoire Staechelin’ against the walls (which flower on both old and new wood), clematis in various pruning groups, wisteria that must be pruned twice a year to encourage flowering, and honeysuckle. ’s Afternoons pollarding: willows and cornus that are cut back each year for leaf colour and shape. Then the evergreens, hedges and the formative pruning of larger trees. In a garden with hundreds of species there is always another plant that calls for attention.

Fruitdag: appels en peren snoeien
donderdag 4 maart 2027

Wildflower Meadows and Hayfields in Your Garden
11 juni 2027
De Wiersse has long been home to several species of orchid and to stinsen plants, thanks to management that has been aimed at botanically rich hay meadow for generations. But anyone can have a hay meadow: all you need is one square metre. In this hands-on study day you learn how to turn your lawn into a flowering hay meadow.
We spend most of the day outdoors and look at hay meadows at every stage: lawn that has only recently been converted, with its first flowers; old hay meadow with a rich mix of plants; woodland edges where grass and shade meet; and grassland with problems for which we look for solutions together. You see with your own eyes what works and why, and what you can apply at home. We also advise on how to create a hay meadow or flower meadow yourself, and we look at tools and options for smaller gardens.
